The Brunswick County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently organized a field trip for nineteen cadets, accompanied by parents and nine senior leaders, to the Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. The event included a high-definition digital presentation on space exploration at the SciDome Sky Theater as part of CAP’s Aerospace Education Program.

During the visit, cadets attended “The Sky Tonight!” program, which began with a live view of the local sky and introduced participants to ancient star constellations. The guide highlighted three prominent stars and demonstrated how to identify Orion. Cadets learned about how early civilizations created mythological figures from constellations.

The theater simulation then took attendees on a virtual journey through space, moving past planets in the solar system including Mercury and Pluto. The experience concluded with a rapid return to Earth after exploring distant regions like the Kuiper belt.

Afterward, cadets visited Paul Dennis Science Hall for a talk on telescopes led by docent Rebecca Gaskins. One cadet asked about a piece of Hubble Telescope glass on display; it was explained that it had been donated by someone who worked on the telescope. A senior member’s question about planetary orbits was answered with an analogy comparing planetary alignment to pizza dough being spun into a disc due to centrifugal force.

Cadets also participated in hands-on science activities such as observing objects floating on air columns and experimenting with black hole simulations.

At the end of their visit, senior leaders gathered the group for a pizza party nearby. Cadets described their experiences as “awesome” and “amazing.” The event aimed to inspire interest in aerospace careers among participants.

According to CAP, its Cadet Program is open to youth ages 12-18 and focuses on leadership development, aerospace education, fitness, and character building. Many astronauts and scientists have begun their careers through CAP programs. Participants gain skills intended to help them achieve future goals.
