A new report by the College Board shows North Carolina four-year public university tuition and fees have risen more than 50 percent in the last 15 years.
The hike, from $4,831 in 2004-05 to $7,281 in 2019-20, is the 30th largest increase of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Between 2018-19, when tuition and fees were $7,350 and 2019-20, tuition decreased 1 percent, according to the College Board numbers, posted on TheCenterSquare.com.
The study also shows that in five states, average tuition at four-year universities has decreased over the past five years when costs are adjusted for inflation.
Nine states posted tuition increases of at least 15 percent over the same five-year period.
In South Carolina, tuition and fees grew 45 percent over the last 15 years. In 2004-5 it was $8,956 and in 2019-20, it’s $13,057.
In 10 states, the average out-of-state tuition was more than three times that of the in-state tuition, the study found.
