The North Carolina Department of Revenue gave taxpayers some much-needed breathing room amid the COVID-19 pandemic by extending certain filing deadlines.

According to a press release shared on Rep. John Hardister’s (R-Whitsett)  Facebook page, the Department extended tax penalty relief for failure to pay a license, file a tax return or failure to pay taxes that were due on March 15 until July 15, if the corresponding license is obtained, the return is filed, or tax is paid on or before July 15, 2020.

The Department is also providing relief from late action penalties applicable to several tax types, including income, franchise, withholding, sales and use, scrap tire disposal, white goods disposal; motor vehicle lease and subscription, solid waste disposal, 911 service charge for prepaid telecommunications service; dry-cleaning solvent, primary forest products, freight car line companies, and various taxes administered by the excise tax division.

Most taxpayers do not need to request a penalty waiver; penalties will automatically be waived. However, taxpayers who receive an initial assessment of a penalty included in the relief listed above should contact the Department for more information.

Call 1-877-252-3052, or write to the Department at: North Carolina Department of Revenue, Customer Service, P.O. Box 1168, Raleigh, NC 27602.
