First Presbyterian Church recently issued the following announcement.
At mid-year 2020 FPC Burlington finds that donations to the Salem Presbytery “Pennies for Hunger” program have declined significantly (from a 2019 monthly average of ~$ 200.00 to a 2020 monthly average of ~$ 80.00). Ordinarily these funds would be collected at the end of the 11:00 am service on the second Sunday of each month. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the attendant mid-March suspension of all in-person congregation gatherings, the Session has approved a request that members who have traditionally donated to this program continue to do so each month. Donations should be made by mailing checks or cash to the church with a note that the donation is for the Salem Presbytery “Pennies for Hunger” program. Donations should not be made through “egiving”.
The “Pennies for Hunger” donations from member churches support the Salem Presbytery’s “Domestic Hunger” Grant program which has two components: [i] International Hunger Grants and [ii] Domestic Hunger Grants (both part of the PC(USA) “HUNGER PROGRAM”). These grants support agencies and programs either endorsed by, partnered with, or supported through member congregations of the Presbytery. Currently three local programs are benefiting from Domestic Hunger Grants sponsored by FPC Burlington and awarded by the Salem Presbytery Domestic Hunger Committee: Allied Churches of Alamance County, Residential Treatment Services of Alamance, Inc., and the Andrews Elementary Snack Pack Program. FPC Burlington’s continued financial support enables Salem Presbytery operation of this worthy program.
