JD Wooten, a candidate for North Carolina Senate District 24, is facing an ethics complaint for allegedly failing to disclose rental income on his Statement of Economic Interest when he became a candidate for office.
John Lewis, a former State Elections and Ethics Enforcement Board member, filed the complaint, the Carolina Journal reported on Oct. 16.
The complaint stated that "In July 2018, Mr. Wooten had rented out the home he owned in Greensboro to help cover the costs of that house."
Lewis further charges that Wooten purchased a home in March 2019 that later turned into a rental property.
Lewis writes that because Wooten rented one of the homes to "help cover the costs of that house," he alleged that "the rental income would have exceeded the $5,000 threshold," required for reporting on the Statement of Economic Interest.
Wooten's Statement of Economic Interest, which he would use to declare any income sources totaling more than $5,000 per year, listed only one such source of income in 2019, the Carolina Journal reported.
