Guilford County Parks issued the following announcement on Aug. 6.
Guilford County Parks reconfigured a portion of the existing tennis courts into 10 permanent pickleball courts at Bur-Mil Park, 5834 Bur-Mil Club Rd. Pickleball, which is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, is the fastest-growing sport in America. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the pickleball courts will take place Friday, Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. Following the ribbon cutting, Precision Golf & Tennis will offer a short pickleball demonstration.
The Family Tennis & Pickleball Center consists of three regulation tennis courts, four 8U junior tennis courts, and 10 permanent regulation pickleball courts. The pickleball facility includes two rows of five pickleball courts with seating on each end and a half-fence separating the rows.
“The great thing about pickleball is that it’s a sport for virtually anyone,” said Todd Moore, Bur-Mil Park Supervisor. “We saw a big demand for pickleball during COVID and we figured it would be a great way to repurpose our older tennis courts into something more people could use”.
The courts are available to the general public at no cost on a first-come, first-serve basis during regular park hours, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., when not in use for scheduled programming.
The park will host tournament play starting with the Precision Summer Slam Aug. 14 and 15. Participants are guaranteed a minimum of four games and all skill levels welcome. Registration is still open for the tournament.
Precision Instruction, in partnership with Carolina Tennis & Paddle, will provide free and paid programming including learn to play clinics, leagues and tournaments for players looking to meet new players and improve their games. Interested players can follow @burmilpickleball on Facebook or email at carolinatennisandpaddle@gmail.com for more information and updates (this page is managed by Carolina Tennis & Paddle). A schedule board will be posted at the courts with upcoming events and an online calendar will be available with scheduled activities.
