County of Guilford issued the following announcement on Aug. 19.
At the recent National Association of Counties (NACo) Conference July 9-12 in Prince George’s County, Maryland, newly-elected, first-term Guilford County Commissioner, James Upchurch, joined more than 2,000 county leaders for the first in- person meeting since before the pandemic began.
County appointed and elected officials convened to discuss strategies to drive recovery in our communities, as well as federal policy and legislation on a wide range of key issues. More than three dozen educational workshops and meetings explored topics including infrastructure, broadband accessibility, affordable housing, technology, reducing the number of mentally ill individuals in jails, economic development, disaster preparedness and recovery and other topics important to counties across the country.
During the conference, Commissioner Upchurch was chosen to serve on the Community, Economic, and Workforce Development steering committee. This national steering committee is responsible for all matters pertaining to housing, community and economic development, public works, and workforce development including the creation of affordable housing and housing options for different populations, residential, commercial, and industrial development, and building and housing codes. Commissioner Upchurch joins 7 other county-appointed and elected leaders from across the state to represent North Carolina.
Upchurch’s appointment carries forward a legacy of national leadership positions held by Guilford County Commissioners. Upchurch joins fellow commissioners Kay Cashion, a long time NACo leader who currently serves as Vice Chair of the Arts and Culture Commission as well as Vice Chair of the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee and Carlvena Foster who serves as the 2021 President of the Women of NACo.
“I was honored to represent Guilford County at the NACo conference last month,” said Upchurch. “I have obtained a wealth of information and look forward to implementing new ideas in Guilford County and providing input on the national committee. This is a great opportunity to focus key issues that impact our economy both locally and on a national level.”
Congratulations to Commissioner James Upchurch on his new appointment!
