Town of Oak Ridge issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.
The Town of Oak Ridge is excited to announce that the perimeter trail on the Whitaker property is now open. Parking is available in a small parking area at the end of the asphalt driveway at 8515 Scoggins Road (please park in the direction of the curb stops). We ask that visitors stay directly on the trail as the center portion of the property is still being used for farming. Pets must remain leashed, and two Dogipot stations have been placed in different areas of the property to assist pet owners in the requirement to clean up after their animals.
In June of 2018, the Town of Oak Ridge purchased this 61-acre parcel of historic farmland within the Historic District and the Town Core. The property is located directly behind Town Hall and the Town is in the process of completing development plans in order to meet its goal of providing the community with expanded recreational offerings. The Town’s next step is to apply for an NC PARTF (Parks and Recreation Trust Fund) grant, which would help defray the costs of development.
Development of the Whitaker property demonstrates our effort to preserve history and extends our commitment to open space preservation while preserving a beautiful rural landscape in the heart of Oak Ridge.
