County of Guilford issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is pleased to welcome Sharon Tutterow Barlow as interim Department of Social Services (DSS) Director, effective immediately.
Sharon brings more than 30 years of social services experience along with strong leadership skills, a focus on staff engagement, and an emphasis on community collaboration which make her uniquely qualified to take on this new role.
Barlow began her career with social services at the Caldwell County DSS where she served as a Child Protective Services social worker and supervisor. She has been with the Guilford County DSS for 12 years where she has acted as Division Director for both Economic Services and Children’s Services, and Deputy Director for DSS.
Sharon Barlow said, “I am excited for the opportunity to continue to serve Guilford County. I am proud of the work that we do and very proud of our staff who are committed to providing excellent service to our community.”
Barlow has been instrumental in reorganizing the Guilford County DSS to maximize efficiency and provide quality services to the citizens of Guilford County.
Victor Isler, Assistant County Manager for Successful People commented, “Guilford County is appreciative of Sharon’s longstanding commitment to the Department of Social Services and I am excited to work shoulder-to-shoulder with her during this transformative period.”
Sharon attended Appalachian State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in social work. She was drawn to social work through her firsthand, childhood experience when her parents served as foster parents for The Children’s Home Society of North Carolina for 15 years, providing care to over 50 children.
She was born and raised in Greensboro, NC where she and her husband Danny currently reside. They are members of First Baptist Church Greensboro and have 2 children who are both students at Appalachian State University.
