The new superintendent of the Alamance-Burlington School System is no stranger to the area.

Dain Butler was named to the post by the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education on Monday. He spent 17 years with the school system and was educated there.

"It is exciting to welcome Dr. Butler back to Alamance County," Sandy Ellington-Graves, board chairperson, told WXII

After getting his education in the school system, Butler obtained a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He then served as a teacher at Broadview Middle School, as well as assistant principal, principal, and administrator.

Butler left to gain experience as a superintendent, filling that bill in Roanoke Rapids for five years.

He will return to the Alamance-Burlington School System on July 1, WXII reported.

"The board is very appreciative of the staff and community feedback to the board," Patsy Simpson, board vice-chairperson, said. "We feel the selection of Dr. Butler is in line with what the community asked for and we are extremely pleased to welcome him back to ABSS."

For his part, Butler said he is happy to return home.

"I am sincerely appreciative of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lead Alamance-Burlington schools as superintendent," Butler said, as reported by WXII. "This is my home. Our most important role as a school district is to grow Alamance County's next generation of well-prepared leaders and engaged citizens."

Butler said one of his goals is to work with the community’s higher education partners, the Alamance Chamber and its member businesses, and the entire community to better prepare children for future success.
