Work began Tuesday on a $34-million project at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, according to ABC 45.

Renovations include expanding the cardiac unit, to support people living with heart disease, and the Norville Breast Care Center.

The expansion should allow for more health care advancements in the region. Officials from Cone Health said the expansion is necessary if the area wants to make health care more accessible for its residents and broaden patient care.

Cone Health is a not-for-profit health care network serving people in Alamance, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, and Rockingham counties and the surrounding area.

“With this project ... some of the most advanced health care anywhere will be in Burlington,” Mark Gordon, the hospital’s president, told ABC 45 about the upgrades.

New, advanced equipment will be added to the Cone Health Heart and Vascular and Interventional Radiology Center at Alamance Regional, including a CT scanner with specialized cardiac capabilities, ABC 45 reported. More than 1,000 people will be helped each year with cardiovascular services, including advanced heart scans.

“While we will provide the best quality care using the most advanced treatments, we will offer a more comprehensive approach that helps people avoid heart disease and stay well after treatment,” Mary Jo Cagle, Cone Health’s CEO, said when asked what the new project will bring to cardiac patients.

Renovations will affect approximately 49,000 square feet at the medical center, with an additional 14,000 square feet added to the existing building.

The Norville Breast Care Center will gain approximately 8,000 square feet of space, almost doubling its original size.

The project is expected to be finished in a little over two years, according to ABC 45.
