Some of the student-athletes in the Alamance-Burlington School System will see some major changes in the sports facilities they use, thanks to a budget line item of $938,000.

The money will be shared between two major projects.

Almost three-fourths of it, $688,000, will be used to upgrade and replace the track at Hugh M. Cummings High School. Eastern Alamance High will use the remaining $250,000 to replace the press box and concession stand.

"We're definitely excited for much-needed renovations and that's a large chunk of change to be devoted solely to athletic facilities,” George Robinson, director of athletics of Alamance-Burlington School System, said in a recent report. “The repairs are much needed. We want to thank legislators for taking care of the folks in Alamance County.”

State Sen. Amy Galey (R-Alamance) toured the facilities on Wednesday and made the announcement that money was in the pipeline.

“While working on the state budget this year, I looked at my district and saw a need to use funding to help our children,” Galey said. “Student-athletes deserve adequate facilities. Participation in sports is closely linked to success in school and beyond. Knowing the condition of the Cummings track, I wanted to address a pressing need.”
