CITY OF BURLINGTON: Help shape our community and apply to serve on Burlington's Board of Adjustment

City of Burlington issued the following announcement on Aug. 25.

Do you live within Burlington's Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ)?  Help shape our community and apply to serve on Burlington's Board of Adjustment. The BOA reviews and decides applications from the community regarding Appeals of decisions by City Staff and the Historic Preservation Commission, Special Use Permits, and Water-related and Zoning/Subdivision Variances (UDO 10.4.A.).

The ETJ is an area of one mile from the City limits that is subject to Burlington's planning and zoning regulations (If the area is in another municipality, like Graham, Elon, or Gibsonville it is not in the ETJ).  Since the 1950s, the ETJ has been used by cities in North Carolina to manage growth and guide development.

People living in the ETJ do not pay City of Burlington property taxes and do not vote in municipal elections. To ensure that they have a say in regulations that effect them, seats on both the City's Planning & Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustments are specifically designated for ETJ-residents. Landowners in the ETJ may also submit a protest petition if adjacent land within the City limits is proposed to be rezoned.

We are currently seeking ETJ residents for the Board of Adjustment.  You can apply to serve at https://www.burlingtonnc.gov/1408/Apply-to-Serve
