When Brittany Shaw was a student in nursing school, she used to bake cookies as a way to make money.
Eventually, she turned it into a business, but Covid-19 forced her to put that dream on the back burner for a while. Now, she’s preparing to try again as she will open a Sweet B Cookies store at Holly Hill Mall in Burlington in about a month.
“I can honestly say that I have no fear in this moment because I’ve seen the signs that this is my purpose in life to connect to my community, to give back to my community,” she said in an elonnewsnetwork.com article. “And I can’t fail.”
After the pandemic prompted her to close her first bake shop, she took her baking talents to the DC Community Kitchen in Graham. But the dream of owning her own shop again remained.
“I said, ‘Lord,’ I said, ‘When it’s time for me to go back and do my cookie thing, I want you to push me out of this position,’” she said.
Near Elon, The Oak House sells her goodies and owner Phil Smith said he’s glad to see her business pick up again.
“It’s a good sign when somebody has a product they put their heart and soul into it and they work hard,” Smith said in the article. “Then to see them grow and develop and maybe make that bigger. I mean, that’s a great thing.”
Shaw makes the cookies by herself, but her husband plans to learn the recipes so he can help out as needed. Her children will also chip in as needed, she said.
When the bake shop flourishes again, she has dreams of expanding the business by hosting baking classes for children around the holidays.
“I definitely love to help people and to see them smile,” Shaw said. “Sometimes, after a rough day, something sweet that is nostalgic that reminds you of grandma’s house. And that’s what our cookies do."
