City of High Point Public Library issued the following announcement on Dec. 11.
A Southern Folktale Odyssey a Winter Heritage Book Club Topic coming in 2023!Feb. 3, Feb. 17 and Mar. 10, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. (each day)
Telling stories is central to Southern identity. No matter what region or ethnicity, Southerners pride themselves on their recountings of murders and hauntings, tall tales, shamelessly embellished histories, plaintive ballads, just-so stories, hilarious thigh-slappers, and parables infused with religious, moral or sometimes cynical meaning.
In our selection by Pamela Petro, Sitting Up With the Dead (2001), we’ll follow the author on a tour of Southern places and explore different tales and their tellers in their natural environments.
Participants will be encouraged to share favored stories, as well!
Join us. We meet simultaneously in-person and via Zoom on three Friday mornings.
Contact Larry at (336) 883-3637 (during library hours) or larry.cates@highpointnc.gov to learn how to participate.
