Learn Remodeling and Carpentry for Free | CITY OF HIGH POINT: (highpointnc.gov)
City of High Point issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.
Don't miss a chance to learn remodeling and carpentry for Free!
In cooperation with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA) and the North Carolina Home Builders Association, the City of High Point conducts an occupational training program for low to moderate income residents.
Purpose
The program, which includes hands-on and construction theory, is designed to give participants an opportunity to learn skills and to make them more marketable to local employers. This program has the means by which residents in a community can learn a skill and thereby develop a sense of worth within them.
Classes & Curriculum
Two classes of 10 residents each are held each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, lasting 8 weeks each. Each student receives training, books, tools and a pre-apprenticeship graduation certificate upon completion. The nationally recognized PACT curriculum, developed by the Home Builders Institute, is used in the class room. A utility building (8 feet by 10 feet) is constructed by each class using blueprints and is donated by the City to a local, non-profit organization.
Training Project
The training model also allows students to work on a community project during training. With the NCHFA providing a grant for affordable housing projects that matches the City's investment dollar for dollar, CTP graduates have the opportunity to gain experience with home rehabilitations with High Point Community Against Violence (HPCAV) as well as in new construction techniques with Habitat for Humanity. The class site is located at the HPCAV location on Main Street.
