Members of the Tar River Composite Squadron participated in a STEM Career Fair at Lee Woodard Elementary School on November 20, 2025. The event aimed to introduce elementary students and their families to various careers in aviation and the broader aerospace industry.

During the fair, squadron members highlighted multiple career paths within aviation, including roles such as commercial pilots, military aviators, aerospace engineers, and air traffic controllers. The activities were designed to show that the field includes a range of professions beyond piloting aircraft.

“We wanted students to see that aviation careers aren’t just about flying planes,” said Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Zach Beal, Squadron Cadet Aerospace Education Officer. “Whether they are interested in engineering, technology, operations, or even business management, there’s a place in the aerospace industry for that.”

A key attraction was Civil Air Patrol’s STEM Kit flight simulators. These simulators allowed students to experience basic aircraft operation while learning about flight principles and aviation technology. Attendees also engaged in hands-on activities such as coloring pages related to STEM careers and constructing paper airplanes and foam planes.

Squadron personnel offered demonstrations on navigation techniques, radio communication procedures, and explained how STEM concepts are used in Civil Air Patrol missions. This interactive approach provided families with insights into the practical applications of science and technology in aviation.

The event saw strong attendance from families at Lee Woodard Elementary School. Many parents and students asked questions about educational pathways into aerospace fields and showed interest in Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program as an introduction to STEM-related careers.

“The enthusiasm from our students and families was incredible,” said one staff member at Lee Woodard. “Having Civil Air Patrol here brought aviation careers to life in a way that really resonated with our students. The flight simulators were especially engaging.”

The school’s staff coordinated closely with the squadron to ensure meaningful exposure for students to different STEM opportunities. Their efforts supported both the school’s focus on early career exploration and Civil Air Patrol’s outreach objectives.

Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Beal commented on the importance of these events: “Every time we get the chance to connect with our community and inspire young people about STEM careers, we take it. That’s what outreach is all about.”

By participating in local school events like this career fair, Tar River Composite Squadron continues its commitment to community service and supporting youth interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and aviation fields.
